Arden Lembryk made six saves with
Hannah Cooksey providing the only goal of the game to lead the Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team past Wagner, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon at Waldron Family Stadium on campus. The Mountaineers improve to 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the Northeast Conference with their second consecutive home win.
The Mountaineers struck for the only goal of the game in the 28th minute when Cooksey fired a left-footed shot into the lower left-hand corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
Kalli Bell picked up the assist on the play, feeding Cooksey near the top of the penalty box. Cooksey took one touch to her left to find space for her shot. The Mountaineers were able to maintain the one-goal advantage for a 1-0 lead at the half with Lembryk making four saves in the opening 45 minutes.
The Mount had a chance to push its lead to two with a pair of scoring chances in the 84th minute. Wagner goalkeeper Erin Kelly made two sensational stops to keep her team in the game. The first came when Bell broke in free, but Kelly was able to deny the shot.
Isabella Wendler then had a shot stopped by a diving Kelly a few seconds later.
Wagner (0-4-1, 0-3-1 NEC) then had a chance to tie the score in the closing seconds. Jordyn Price saw her shot from 20 yards out hit the cross bar with 37 seconds remaining. The rebound went to Ari Michitti, but Lembryk came up with the save to preserve the clean sheet.
The Mount finished the game with a 19-to-10 advantage in shots, including a 9-to-6 edge in shots on goal. Lembryk picked up her first collegiate victory and clean sheet with six saves for the Mountaineers. Bell paced the Mount with five shots while Wendler had four. Kelly made eight saves for the Seahawks.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday, April 2, with a 5:00 p.m. home game against Fairleigh Dickinson.
