Emmitsburg, Md. (March 22, 2021)—Kyle Davis scored on a penalty kick in overtime to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 3-2 victory over Sacred Heart at Waldron Family Stadium on Monday afternoon. Davis scored twice in the victory as the Mount rallied from a pair of one-goal deficit to secure its first win of the season.
In the final minute of the first overtime period,
Alek Wroblewski took a ball near the top of the penalty area, dribbled into traffic, and saw his shot blocked and then go off a Sacred Heart hand, giving the Mount a penalty kick.
Davis, who had scored on a penalty kick in the second half, gavethe Mount the win with a well struck ball to the right side of the goal to lift the Mount to the 3-2 win.
Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Mount dominated play in the second stanza, holding 13-to-1 shot advantage to tie the score and force the extra period. In the 65
th minute, Davis sent a free kick into the box where
Gavin Watt was able to head the ball home to tie the score at 1-1.
The Pioneers (0-5-0, 0-4-0 NEC) regained the lead just 3:35 later when Segundo Nevarro took a pass from Olliver Persson and beat Mount goalkeeper
Adam Siviter for a 2-1 advantage. The Mount kept the pressure up, and saw a potential tying goal by
Marcos Lucero called back by a Mount handball.
In the 76
th minute, the Mount's
Adao Manuel drew a penalty in the box, setting up the Mount for the tying goal. Davis took the penalty, and saw his shot denied by Sacred Heart keeper Joshua Inkel. The Pioneers, however, jumped early on the kick, and Davis had a second chance. This time he buried the shot to knot the score at 2-2.
The Pioneers grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opening half on a Grady Kozak strike from 18 yards out.
Davis finished the game with two goals and an assist as the Mount (1-4-1, 1-2-1 NEC) outshot Sacred Heart, 20-to-6, in the contest. The Mount had a 7-to-1 advantage in corner kicks as well. Siviter made one save for the Mount in the win while Inkel made on save for the Pioneers.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action next Monday, March 29, with a 4:00 p.m. home game with Bryant.
