EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 20, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's baseball surrendered a late lead in the opener of Saturday's doubleheader, leading to a sweep at the hands of the Long Island Sharks. The defeats drop the Mount's record to 4-10 (0-2 NEC).
Game 1 | LIU 8, Mount 5
The opener got off to a strong start.
AJ Holcomb registered four hits for the game, including a homerun in the fourth that put the Mount up 2-1. Starter
Jordan Geber was crafty on the mound with nine strikeouts among 22 batters faced.
A single by
CJ Kozorosky in the sixth extended the lead to 4-1 with a single that scored two runs. The insurance was not enough as LIU came back in the seventh to score three runs.
Thomas Bramley returned the lead to the Mount with a double that scored Holcomb, and the home side headed into the ninth with a 5-4 advantage. But in that frame, the Sharks loaded the bases, tied the contest on a bases-loaded walk and took the win with a pair of RBI singles to complete the comeback.
Game 2 | LIU 6, Mount 4
LIU put the nightcap to bed early, taking a 1-0 lead by the second a putting a three spot on the board in the fifth.
Thomas Savastio and
Ryan Haddaway each recorded two-run single late in the game, but it was not enough to mount a retort.
Luke Pryor was effective in relief, surrendering one run in 3 1/3 innings.
Mount St. Mary's will try and salvage the series finale, scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday (March 21) at E.T. Straw Family Stadium.
