EMMITSBURG, Md. (March 15, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's men's soccer team falls to Saint Francis Brooklyn 2-1 after a late comeback comes up short for the Mountaineers.
The Mount was outshot 15-8 by the Terriers, but was near equal in shots on target. Keeper Adam Siviter made five saves in net today.
Marcos Lucero netted the only goal for the Mountaineers, while freshman Alek Wroblewski was looking dangerous throughout the game.
"Tough loss this afternoon." Head coach Bryan Cunningham said. "Credit to St. Francis for getting the early goal and locking things down from there. I'm proud of the players for battling back, but in the end we just learn to start sharper."
The Mount started off the game by trying to cross the ball in and play long balls over the top throughout the first half. The Mountianeers had a scoring opportunity towards the end of the half, when graduate student Lucero put a good cross in from the corner to find Ian Buckwalter in the middle, but it glanced off his head and went wide.
Right before half, the Terriers found the back of the net off a cross that bounced around in the box and Harald Scollund turned around then half-volleyed it in to give them a 1-0 lead.
During the second half, the Mountaineers defense absorbed some pressure from the Terriers until they counter attacked off a goal kick. The Terriers played in a nice cross that found the striker, who got a lucky bounce off his body and the ball found the back of the net.
After that goal the Mountaineers kept pushing forwards to get a goal back, which they eventually found with a couple of minutes remaining. Kyle Davis played the ball out wide to Adao Manuel who found Lucero at the top of the box, then Lucero put in a low drive that slotted it past the keeper. The Mount had some opportunities at the end of the game, but could not capitalize on them.
The Mount drops to 0-4-1, while the Terriers are now 2-1 on the season. The Mountaineers return home to play Sacred Heart on Monday, March 22nd at Waldron Family Stadium at 4:00 p.m.
