Emmitsburg, Md. (March 13, 2021)—Mount St. Mary's rallied for a 9-8 extra-inning win in the opening game of today's doubleheader with UAlbany, and carried the momentum with a 9-1 win in game two to earn a sweep of the four-game series. The Mount improves to 5-11 on the season.
GAME 1: Mount St. Mary's 9, UAlbany 8 (9 inn.)
The Mount scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings, and
Mariah Godde's RBI single in the ninth provided the winning run in the Mount's 9-8 victory.
Trailing 8-5 heading into the bottom of the seventh,
Tori Bowles led off the inning with a single.
Lexi Donovan followed with a two-run homer over the right-center field fence to cut the deficit to one. With one out,
Maggie Kane singled to right field, and moved to second when the right fielder misplayed the ball. With two outs,
Vanessa Martin came through the clutch hit, a single to center to score Kane with the tying run.
After a scoreless eighth, the tiebreaker rule was put in place in the top of the ninth. UAlbany had the go-ahead runner on third with one out in the ninth with Kelly Barkevich up to bat. She grounded to Mount shortstop Godde, who fired the ball home to cut down the runner at the plate. The Great Danes (2-4) loaded the bases, but Mount pitcher
Amanda Berkley got a strikeout to end the threat.
In the bottom of the ninth, Godde laced a one-out single that glanced off the shortstop's glove and into left field to score pinch runner
Abigayle Perry, who was placed at second to start the inning.
Donovan and Godde each went 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBI in the victory while Martin was 3-for-4. Berkley started for the Mount, allowing five runs (two earned) in two innings.
Amaya Bowman pitched two innings of relief, allowing a pair of runs, while
Elizabeth King allowed one run in three innings of work. Berkley re-entered the game in the eighth, and held UAlbany off the scoreboard the rest of the way to pick up her third win of the series.
GAME 2: Mount St. Mary's 9, UAlbany 1 (5 inn.)
The Mount carried the momentum of the first game win into the nightcap, downing the Great Danes, 9-1, in five innings. The Mount scored five times in the bottom of the first to take control of the game.
After UAlbany took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Mount responded with a big inning.
Kaylee Stoner singled and stole second to set the table for Bowles, who doubled to even the score at 1-1. Martin walked and Perry singled to load the bases for
Shelbee Holcomb, who plated two with a single to left. Kane followed with a two-run double to make it 5-1.
The Mount added two runs in both the third and fourth innings to seal the victory. Stoner had an RBI double in the third while Holcomb added a two-run triple in the fourth.
Avery Neuhart picked up her first win of the season with a complete-game four-hitter. Four Mountaineers had two hits in the game with Holcomb going 2-for-2 with four RBI and Perry 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Stoner was 2-for-3 out of the leadoff spot in the lineup and Bowles was 2-for-3 with two runs scored as well.
UP NEXT: The Mount hosts Coppin State for a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 16, at Our Lady of the Meadows Field on campus. The first game starts at 2:00 p.m.
