Mount Softball Sweeps Coppin State to Stretch Win Streak to Six

Emmitsburg, Md. (March 17, 2021)--The Mount St. Mary's softball team swept a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader against visiting Coppin State to stretch its win streak to six.  Kaia Bonshock and Tori Bowles each went 4-for-6 with four RBI in the twinbill.  The Mountaineers improve to 7-11 on the year.  In the opening game, the Mountaineers posted a 5-4 victory on Bonshock's tie-breaking RBI double in the sixth.  In game two, freshman Amaya Bowman picked up her first collegiate win in the Mount's 8-3 victory.

In game one, the Mount jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Kaylee Stoner led off the inning with a base hit to left, advancing to second when the left-field misplayed the ball.  Bridgette Gilliano then reached on an error on her sacrifice bunt, putting runners at the corners with no outs.  Gilliano advanced to second on a groundout, and Bowles came through with a base hit to plate both runners for the early lead.

The Mount added to the lead with two more runs in the fourth.  Bowles tallied an RBI single in the inning while Bonshock worked a bases-loaded walk.  The Eagles (0-11) tied the score with four runs in the top of the sixth inning.  Sydney Dombroski lofted a two-run homer to put Coppin State on the scoreboard, and Melanie Aguilera added a two-run shot to left to tie the game.

The Mountaineers regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth.  Bowles doubled, and an error allowed Vanessa Martin to reach base, putting runners on second and third with one out.  The Mount attempted a squeeze play, but pinch runner Kirsten Mumma was caught stealing in a rundown when Bonshock could not get the bunt down.  Bonshock made amends by lacing a two-out double to left-center field to plate Martin with the go-ahead run.

Amanda Berkley, who started the game and pitched five scoreless innings, re-entered in the top of the seventh and retired the side in order to pick up the win.  Berkley finished with six scoreless innings allowing just four hits to improve to 5-2 on the year.  Bowles went 3-for-4 with three RBI while Bonshock and Stoner each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

In the second game, the Mount jumped out to a 7-0 lead and cruised to an 8-3 win.  Bowman picked up her first collegiate win, allowing one run in five innings of work.  Kassidy Johnson went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBI in the victory while Bonshock was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.  Kirsten Mumma also added two hits for the Mount in the win.

The Mount scored four times in the bottom of the first to take control of the game.  Stoner doubled to lead things off in the bottom of the first, and came home with the first run of the game on a Bowles base hit.  Bonshock was hit by a pitch, and Johnson broke the inning open with a line-drive three-run homer over the center field fence.  It is the first collegiate home run for the freshman who is now hitting .323 on the season.

Mount St. Mary's added three more runs in the second to extend the lead to seven.  Martin's RBI single opened the scoring in the inning and Bonshock provided the big hit, a two-run homer to center field.  Abigayle Perry scored on a wild pitch in the fifth for the Mount's final run of the contest.

The Mount's six-game win streak is the longest since a six-game streak during the 2006 season.  The Mount has not had a seven-game win streak since moving to NCAA Division I in 1988-89.

Mount St. Mary's begins Northeast Conference this weekend with a four-game series at Central Connecticut on March 20 and 21 with 1:00 p.m. doubleheaders each day.
