RICHMOND, Va. (February 26, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's baseball dropped a pair of games of the Richmond Spiders Friday to lead off the 2021 season.
Myles Nicholson,
Vaughn Parker II, and
AJ Holcomb recorded multi-hit games for the Mount. On the mound,
Jordan Geber and
Blake Beal totaled scoreless relief appearances, with Geber striking out three Spiders.
Nick Breznak gave up two runs in 3 2/3 innings in his Mountaineer debut, adding six punch outs.
Game 1: Richmond 6, Mount St. Mary's 2
After the Spiders took a 2-0 lead in the second inning, the Mount rallied over the next two frames.
Ryan Fisher secured the first run of the year by grounding out, allowing
Brady Drawbaugh to score. Holcomb's single later in the inning brought home Nicholson to tie the game.
Richmond's immediate rally came in the bottom of the third as the Spiders put a crooked four on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. The Mount was held to one hit and two free passes the rest of the way.
Game 2: Richmond 2, Mount St. Mary's 1
The Mount took their first lead of the year in the first inning of the encore contest. Parker singled on a 2-2 count to bring in Fisher. In a similar fashion of game one, all the offense occurred early. The Parker single earned the Mountaineers' lone run, and Richmond responded with RBI hits in the second and fourth to regain the lead.
There were chances for a rally for the Mount, with hits coming in each inning. Runners were stranded in scoring position in the fifth and sixth, and a double play sealed the ballgame for the Spiders.
The third game of the series is set for a noon first pitch on Saturday (Feb. 27).
