Mount Softball Drops Pair of Games to Close Out Campbell Invitational

Buies Creek, N.C. (February 21, 2021)--The Mount St. Mary's softball team closed out the Campbell Invitational with a pair of losses today, falling to No. 12 Kentucky, 10-0 in five innings, and host Campbell, 8-0.  The Mountaineers posted a 1-3 record in the two-day event.

GAME 1:  No. 12 Kentucky 10, Mount St. Mary's 0 (5 inn.)

Kentucky scored five times in the top of the fourth inning to break the game open en route to a 10-0 win over the Mount in five innigns in the first game of the day.  After a scoreless first inning, the Wildcats (9-0) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second on a Kayla Kowalik three-run homer.  The Mount strung together back-to-back two-out singles from Elizabeth King and Shelbee Holcomb in the bottom of the inning, but Kentucky starting pitcher Autumn Hayes got a strikeout to end the threat.

Kentucky added a run in the third for a 4-0 lead, and then broke the game open with a five-run fourth, highlighted by Erin Coffel's two-run homer.  A single run by the Wildcats in the fifth closed out the scoring.

Mount starting pitcher Avery Neuhart allowed three runs in two innings of work, while King allowed one run in two innings of relief.  Bridgette Gilliano and Erin Krizmanich posted their first collegiate hits in the game.  Gilliano had a single in the fourth inning while Krizmanich had a pinch-hit double in the seventh.

GAME 2:  Campbell 8, Mount St. Mary's 0 (6 inn.)

The Mount bats remained silent in game two as Campbell posted a two-hit shutout in the 8-0 victory.  Kaylee Stoner and Tori Bowles provided the Mount's hits in the game.  The Camels took control early in game two, scoring five times in the bottom of the first inning with Kayla Frendenhall providing the big hit, a two-run homer. 

Mount St. Mary's starting pitcher Amanda Berkley allowed five runs (three earned) in two innings today after tossing an eight-inning complete-game shutout in the Mount's season opener yesterday.  King allowed three runs in 3.2 innings of relief.

UP NEXT:  The Mount heads to the Winthrop Garnet/Gold Classic for four games next weekend, playing Albany and host Winthrop on Saturday, February 27 and the College of Charleston and Albany on Sunday, February 28.
