Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Harrison’s Heroics Help Shatter Records as Mount Overwhelms Bryant

Emmitsburg, Md. (February 20, 2021) – Mount St. Mary's junior guard Michaela Harrison had her best game as a collegiate player, and the Mount set a new record for three-pointers made in a 92-54 dominating victory over the Bryant Bulldogs Saturday.

The Mount improved to 10-4 (9-2 NEC), while Bryant fell to 6-8 (4-6 NEC).

Harrison ended the game with a career-high 35 points. 27 of those points came from beyond-the-arc, and her nine triples set a new record for the Mountaineers. She had previously held a five-way tie at eight, on a list that included teammate Bridget Birkhead.

For the junior from Cleveland, her effort drove her Mount point total to 975, 25 away from becoming the 27th member of the school's 1,000 point club.

"[The game of basketball] is very fun, especially when our team is shooting at such a high level like we did today." Harrison said postgame. "You can't do anything but smile getting back on defense, you're playing so hard. It's fun to watch and to be in that situation."

Birkhead's eight three-pointers came in a game against Maryland Eastern Shore in December 2019 when the team set a record with 16 treys. On Saturday, the squad bested that mark with 18. Birkhead contributed three, and Aryna Taylor and Kayla Agentowicz added two.

Freshman Isabella Hunt led with eight rebounds, and senior Rebecca Lee had an all-around performance of nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and a pair of blocks. Kendall Bresee led with six assists but was held to three points. Her counterpart, leading NEC scorer and Bryant's Brooke Bjelko was limited to six points – all of them coming at the charity stripe.

The offensive effort was combined with a splendid defensive showing. Bryant was held to 34.8 percent from the floor, including 2-for-14 in the opening frame. The Mountaineers won the rebounding battle 42-31.

The game was over midway through the first quarter. Harrison scored the team's first 11 points, and Rebecca Lee's layup at the 3:52 mark put the Mount up 10. A three-point barrage ensued, driving the team's lead to 31-5 by quarter's end.

A three-pointer by Harrison extended the lead past 30 at 39-8 with 7:52 left in the half. They would maintain the advantage to a 52-22 halftime score. Birkhead had a personal seven point streak in the third quarter which drove the lead above 40.

Bryant put together a small run to put a temporary dent in the lead, but a layup by Harrison gave the Mount its largest advantage at 42 with 4:17 to go.

Game two between the Mountaineers and Bulldogs is set for 2 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 21) at Knott Arena.
