Mount Downed by Wagner in Opening Game of Two-Game Series

Emmitsburg, Md. (February 16, 2021)--Mount St. Mary's lost to Wagner, 61-39, on Tuesday night in the first game of a two-game Northeast Conference series at Knott Arena.  Mezie Offurum paced the Mount with 13 points in the game.  Mount St. Mary's drops to 8-8 overall and 7-5 in the NEC with the loss.

Wagner's Elijah Allen opened the scoring with a three-pointer as the Seahawks never trailed in the game.  The Mount pulled within one, 9-8, after an Offurum three-pointer eight minutes into the opening half, but Wagner countered with the next six point to build a 15-8 advantage.  Trailing 17-10 midway through the half, Offurum scored six points during an 8-to-2 Mount run that cut the deficit to 19-18.  Wagner again responded, this time with a 14-to-4 run to extend its advantage to 33-22 before Offurum converted a run to close out the half to make it 33-24 at the break.  The Seahawks (7-5, 7-4 NEC) opened the second half with a 7-to-1 run to build a 15-point advantage and led by double figures the rest of the way.

Offurum finished with 13 points and five rebounds while Nana Opoku chipped in 11 points and eight boards for the Mount.  Wagner held Damian Chong Qui, the Mount's leading scorer, to three points on 1-of-6 shooting.  The Mount converted just 13-of-48 (.271) from the field in the game, including 5-of-26 (.192) in the second half.  The 39 points scored are the fewest in a game since a 69-35 loss at Old Dominion on Dec. 29, 2014.

Alex Morales recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds while dishing out a game-high six assists to lead Wagner, which has won six in a row.  Allen and Nigel Jackson added 11 points each in the win.  Wagner shot 23-of-58 (.397) in the game, including 7-of-16 (.438) from three-point range.

It will be a quick turnaround as the teams meet again tomorrow with a 4:00 p.m. matchup at Knott Arena.
