BROOKLYN, N.Y. (February 13, 2021) – Redshirt sophomore
Aryna Taylor tallied a career-high points, freshman
Isabella Hunt finished with her most rebounds in college and senior
Kendall Bresee came close to a triple-double Saturday against the LIU Sharks. These individual achievements, along with the outstanding efforts of teammates, helped the Mount triumph by an 85-64 final.
Taylor was the most efficient shooter on the team, going 7-of-10 from the floor and 5-for-8 from downtown. Hunt's nine rebounds edged Bresee and
Kayla Agentowicz's totals of eight each, and Bresee added 21 points and tied a career-high with seven assists.
Michaela Harrison and
Rebecca Lee earned double figures with a respective 11 and 10 points, and
Jada Lee played aggressive off the bench, totaling seven points, thanks in large part to a 5-of-6 effort from the charity stripe. That free throw effort, as well as Bresee's 10-of-10 performance, aided the Mount's 90 percent mark from the line. As for three pointers, the team finished with their second-highest percentage (44.0) by going 10-for-18 after a 1-for-7 start.
Mount St. Mary's (8-4, 7-2 NEC) ran away with the game in the second quarter, scoring a season best 31 points and tying their highest halftime total at 50. Long Island (3-10, 3-10 NEC) were also on the wrong end the last time the Mount eclipsed 30 in a quarter, which happened in the NEC quarterfinals last year.
The Sharks received 11 points from Shyla Sanford and 14 rebounds from Kiara Bell.
LIU led once the entire game after Mia Perkins hit a free throw for a 1-0 lead.
Rebecca Lee gave the Mount the lead by scoring six of her 10 points consecutively. After a 6-6 tie, an 8-0 run put the visitors up for good.
During their 30 point second quarter, the Mount rattled off a 10-0 run that extended the advantage from a comfortable 14 points to a decisive 24. Taylor – scoreless after the first – led the charge with a perfect 5-for-5, including 4-for-4 from three. With 6:11 remaining in the third quarter, Taylor hit another trey to put the Mount up 30. They would hit that mark once more in the third for the largest leads of the afternoon.
With the victory, the Mount moves into a tie for second place in the NEC with Wagner. The pair trail leader Saint Francis U by two games, with the Red Flash a perfect 9-0 against the conference.
Mount St. Mary's and LIU will complete the season series Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Steinberg Wellness Center in Brooklyn.
