NORTH BRUNSWICK, N.J. (November 6, 2021) – Looking to stack wins competing in the best-of-seven format, #13 Mount St. Mary's bowling took three contests out of four in a successful opener to the Northeast Conference season. The Mount staved off a rally by #11 Duquesne, and added wins over St. Francis Brooklyn and Saint Francis U.
Senior
Tamera Stanton led the way with a 19.93 Baker average. Sophomore
Alyssa Alexander and senior
Rebecca Dodson also delivered noteworthy efforts, with Alexander securing a 19.80 average and Dodson earning a 19.04.
#13 Mount: 4 | St. Francis Brooklyn 1 (178-130, 167-186, 212-188, 177-147, 162-136)
It would be a passive start for the Mountaineers, who posted their lowest average of the day with a 179.2 for the first match. The Terriers also had trouble getting their footing on the pattern at Bowlero Carolier, scoring under 150 three times. Mount used a 212 game to break a 1-1 tie, carrying the momentum to a 1-0 start in NEC play.
#13 Mount: 4 | #11 Duquesne: 3 (205-175, 159-141, 213-155, 156-188, 181-184, 167-184, 195-154)
The ups-and-downs continued against the Dukes. After rising back to the plus-200 level, the Mount opened on several frames in game two, finishing with a 159. Lucky for them, Duquesne matched their opens to earn a 141. A 213 gave the Mount an enormous 3-0 advantage, but almost not enormous enough as the Dukes mounted a spirited comeback. Falling three pins short of sealing the match in five, Mount St. Mary's had to hold on for game seven. There, a late series of clutch strikes, combined with Duquesne miscues gave the Mountaineers the victory.
#13 Mount: 1 | #12 Sacred Heart: 4 (160-181, 212-158, 171-212, 186-190, 236-237)
Revenge against the team that eliminated the Mount from last year's NEC tournament will have to wait, as the Pioneers found a way to steal momentum at nearly every turn. Scores for the Mountaineers improved to a 193 average, but even their best game of the day could not stem the tide as a 236 met 237 in an excruciating one pin defeat.
#13 Mount: 4 | Saint Francis U: 0 (198-155, 186-167, 214-158, 189-165)
Challenging the energy into the finale, Mount increased their average again to 196 in a sweep of the Red Flash. Rolling each game in the 180's or higher, the Emmitsburgers overwhelmed their counterparts from Cambria County to tally a winning record for the afternoon.
Following the first day, the Mount stands in a three-way tie for first, as Sacred Heart and Long Island also wetnt 3-1 to open NEC competition.
Day two of NEC Meet #1 starts at 9 a.m. tomorrow with three more best-of-seven contests. Mount St. Mary's challenges Wagner for the opener, then faces ranked LIU and Fairleigh Dickinson to close out the weekend. Coverage can be found on the Mount Bowling Facebook page.
