Loretto, Pa. (October 31, 2021)--The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team ended the season on a high note with a 1-0 win at Saint Francis U on Sunday afternoon.
Hannah Cooksey's first-half goal provided the lone score of the game to lift the Mountaineers to the victory. Goalkeeper
Maggie Barron made 10 saves for the shutout in her final collegiate start for the Mount.
The Mount (5-13, 3-7 NEC) got all the offense it needed on Cooksey's tally in the 14th minute.
Elisabeth Rockhill set up the play, driving down the right side and sending a beautiful cross into the box where Cooksey headed it home for her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Rockhill and Kallie Bell each picked up assists on the play giving them each a team-high eight on the year. The Mountaineers maintained the 1-0 lead at the half as each team had six shots in the opening 45 minutes.
Barron kept the Mount on top with pair of saves in the 54th minute, and she added another stop just two minutes later. Barron continued to stand tall in the goal, making five more saves in the half to preserve the shutout. Her last stop came in the 80th minute as the Mount defense was able to hold the Red Flash (4-12-1, 2-7-1 NEC) to just one off-target shot in the final 10 minutes of the game.
For the game, SFU held an 18-to-9 edge in shots, including a 10-to-5 mark in shots on goal. Rockhill and Bell each had a team-high three shots for the Mountaineers, who earned their first win at Saint Francis U since September 10, 2002. The win was also the Mount's first over SFU since a 1-0 victory on October 16, 2009, snapping an 11-game SFU win streak in the all-time series.
Graduate student
Maria Buonomo, a three-time Second Team All-NEC selection in her career, broke the Mount's all-time record for career games played (76) and career starts (75). A defender, Buonomo started 75 of 76 games played during her Mount career, finishing with three goals.
NOTES: Rockhill led the Mount with 16 points this season on four goals and eight assists...
Kalli Bell was second on the team with 14 points (3g, 8a) while
Hannah Cooksey had six goals for 12 points.
