EMMITSBURG, Md. (October 31, 2021) – Freshman men's soccer forward
Cavan Fernandes converted a penalty for his first collegiate goal as Mount St. Mary's was defeated by Long Island 5-1 Sunday.
Fernandes got the opportunity thanks to a handball in the 85
th minute. His shot skirted past the Sharks' Demetri Skoumbakis to prevent the shutout. He is one of two freshmen Mountaineers to register a goal this season, joining
Marcus Lewis.
Mount fired six shots on the afternoon with two on goal. Lewis led the way with a pair, and freshman
Shaan Verma tallied an attempt in his first career start.
A slow paced first half resulted in one goal, secured by the Sharks at the 15
th minute. Emil Jaaskelainen registered his league leading 14
th score on the year. LIU added four goals in the second half, including two from Assane Ben Fall.
The Mount plays one final match this season, hosting Senior Day on November 7
th against Fairleigh Dickinson. Kickoff is 1 p.m. from Waldron Family Stadium.
