Andrew Chwalik withstood a barrage of shots from the Navy Midshipmen. Earning a career-best 10 saves, the Butler, Pa. native kept Mount St. Mary's men's soccer in the game for a time. A first-half strike and two goals in three minutes late gave Navy a 3-0 win.
The back line held firm for most of the contest. Chwalik was tested early, making half his saves in the first 10 minutes. The shutout lasted 36 minutes, with the climax coming with the final save, credited to
Justus Akinlosotu. As Navy's Jason Aoyama drew out the goalkeeper, the junior raced to the goal line, arriving in time to clear the would-be go-ahead goal over the bar.
On the ensuing corner kick, Navy cashed in with a header from Matt Notica. With the Midshipmen dictating pace of play, the Mount was unable tor record a shot in the first half.
Defense continued to hold a 1-0 deficit as the Mountaineers cracked through the Mids' line for a couple shots. After forcing their first corner of the game, Mount St. Mary's witnessed the Navy counterattack succeed for a goal. The Mount's chances were dented minutes later by a one-timer from the six yard line for a 3-0 advantage.
Mount got off three shots in the waning moments, but all chances went wide or were blocked.
Returning to Northeast Conference play Sunday, Mount St. Mary's hits the road once more in 2021 as they face Merrimack in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
