NEWS AND NOTES

  • Mount St. Mary's improved to 6-4 in the Northeast Conference and 10-13 overall with a 67-63 victory at Long Island on Thursday night.  The Mountaineers overcame a 12-point first-half deficit to earn the victory.  Nana Opoku and Jalen Gibbs each scored 15 points to lead the way while Damian Chong Qui added 13 points and a career-high nine assists.  Brandon Leftwich contributed a career-best nine rebounds off the bench.
  • With the victory at Long Island, the Mount surpassed last season's win total and matched last year's conference win total with eight conference games yet to play.
  • The Mount has featured a balanced attack in Northeast Conference play this season with all five starters averaging double figures in scoring in league games this season..  Damian Chong Qui leads at 13.7 points per game, followed by Vado Morse (11.5), Jalen Gibbs (11.0), Malik Jefferson (10.1) and Nana Opoku (10.1)
  • This is the second matchup between the Mount and St. Francis Brooklyn this season.  Buoyed by its best defensive effort in nearly 16 years, the Mount posted a 59-39 victory over St. Francis Brooklyn at Knott Arena on January 20.  Vado Morse led the Mount with 19 points while Nana Opoku posted his second career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Damian Chong Qui has shown the ability to get to the free throw line this season.  The sophomore point guard is 20-for-24 at the charity stripe over the past two games, including 10-for-11 in the win over Long Island on Thursday night.  Chong Qui is tied for second in the NEC this season with 118 free throw attempts.  He is 97-for-118 (.822) at the line this year.
  • The Mount rallied from a 12-point first-half deficit to down Long Island, 67-63, on Thursday night.  It is the sixth time this season the Mountaineers have rallied from a deficit of seven points or more.
