Box Score Loretto, Pa. (February 27, 2020)—Mount St. Mary's fell at Saint Francis U, 75-62, in Northeast Conference action on Thursday night. Damian Chong Qui paced the Mountaineers with 17 points in the loss.
Chong Qui was 7-of-12 from the field and 3-of-6 from three-point for the Mountaineers in the game. Vado Morse added 10 points, five rebounds and five assists while Brandon Leftwich finished with eight points and five boards. Nana Opoku tallied eight points and Malik Jefferson seven for the Mount as well. Isaiah Blackmon paced the Red Flash with 22 points while Keith Braxton had 20 points, 12 rebounds and six assists.
Saint Francis shot 47.5 percent from the field in the game and was 16-of-21 at the foul line. The Mount shot 42.9 percent overall and was 7-of-22 from beyond the three-point arc.
An Opoku basket and a Jefferson free throw pulled the Mount (11-19, 7-10) within four, 39-35, early in the second half, but the Red Flash answered with a 7-0 run to stretch its advantage to double figures. The Mount pulled within seven, 51-44, after a Chong Qui three-pointer, but the Red Flash answered with the next five points with a Blackmon three-pointer making it 56-44 with 12:00 remaining. The Red Flash (20-8, 13-4 NEC) maintained control the remainder of the game to earn the victory.
The Mount jumped out to an early 12-6 lead behind an 8-0 run that was capped by back-to-back three-pointers by Omar Habwe and Chong Qui. The Red Flash rallied back to even the score at 16-16 on a Tyler Stewart traditional three-point play. Back-to-back threes by Gibbs and Chong Qui gave the Mount a 26-22 advantage, and an Opoku hook shot in the lane made it 30-27.
The Red Flash countered with the next 10 points, six from Braxton, to take a 37-30 lead. The Mount got the final bucket of the half on a Jefferson putback to cut the deficit to 37-32 at the break.
SFU shot 45.5 percent (15-of-33) in the opening half, but were just 2-for-9 (.222) from three-point range. The Mount shot 41.9 percent (13-of-31) in the first half while hitting 4-of-11 (.364) from beyond the arc. Chong Qui paced the Mount with 10 first-half points while Blackmon had 10 for the Red Flash.
The Mountaineers close out the regular season on Saturday, February 29, when Fairleigh Dickinson visits Knott Arena for a 4:00 p.m. matchup.
