NEWS AND NOTES

  • Nana Opoku's career day of 25 points and 14 rebounds helped Mount St. Mary's knock off Northeast Conference leader Merrimack, 65-57, at Knott Arena on Sunday afternoon.  The Mount used a 15-to-6 first-half run to take a 28-21 advantage.  After Merrimack took a 31-30 lead early in the second half, the Mont went on a 14-to-3 spurt to take a 10-point lead.  The Mount led by at least eight points the rest of the way.  The Mountaineers held a 40-24 edge on the boards and held Merrimack to 38.8 percent shooting in the game.
  • Mount St. Mary's has clinched a spot in the 2020 Northeast Conference Tournament.  The Mount can finish anywhere from fourth to eighth in the NEC standings.  The Mountaineers are back in the NEC Tournament after missing out last year in Dan Engelstad's first season.
  • Jalen Gibbs is tied for the team lead in scoring at 11.7 points per game this season.  It has been a bit of a roller coaster ride with his scoring output as Gibbs has scored 15 or more points in a game 12 times this season while he has been held to five or less points eight times.  His last four games have been a 24-point effort against Saint Francis U, eight points at Wagner, 19 points at Robert Morris and four points in the win over Merrimack.
  • The Mountaineers are 10-1 this season when posting a higher field goal percentage than the opposition.  Conversely, the Mount is 1-17 when the opponents shoot better from the field in the game.  The Mount is also 1-13 this year when opponents shoot 45 percent or better from the field.
  • Damian Chong Qui pulled down a career-high nine rebounds in the Mount's 65-57 win over Merrimack on Sunday.  The 5-8 point guard finished with nine points and three assists in addition to his nine boards.  Chong Qui is averaging 8.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals over the past two games.  He was held to three points on 1-of-9 shooting in the Mount's 70-55 loss to Saint Francis U on Feb. 15.
  • Up next, the Mount closes out the regular season by hosting Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, February 29, at 4 pm.
