MOUNT UPDATE
The Mount St. Mary's women's tennis team is back after a three-week hiatus for two matchups this weekend against Navy on Saturday, and then open up Northeast Conference play at St. Francis Brooklyn in Flushing, New York on Sunday. The Mountaineers opened the 2020 spring season with a 7-0 loss to Duquesne on January 25th. The squad will look to bounce back from that match after failing to take a set from the Dukes.
SCOUTING THE MIDSHIPMEN
Navy comes into the weekend with a record of 7-2 overall following a 2-1 mark in three matches last weekend. The Midshipmen first dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to Indiana but rebounded with two convincing wins against Georgetown (7-0) and Northeast Conference foe Fairleigh Dickinson (6-1). Annalise Klopfer leads the Midshipmen in dual contests early into this spring season with a 5-0 mark in singles and a 4-0 record in doubles. Dating back to the fall season, Klopfer and her doubles partner Aimee Dervishian have combined for an overall record of 45-9 in singles and 20-7 in doubles.
SCOUTING THE TERRIERS
St. Francis Brooklyn has yet to open their spring season, but currently sit at 0-5 overall and 0-1 in Northeast Conference play from their fall dual matches. The Terriers lone NEC loss came at the hands of Wagner 6-1. Junior Jean-Na Koo leads the team with a 3-2 record in dual matches while sophomore Dea Lako has registered a team best three wins in doubles.
INSIDE THE MATCHUPS
The Mount women's tennis team comes into these two matchups against these two opponents on different ends of the spectrum. The Mountaineers are currently 0-4 all-time against the Midshipmen which includes a 7-0 loss in 2019. Contrary, the program is 8-0 all-time against the Terriers with their thrilling 4-3 victory last season. Alexa Quintanilla, Hannah Davis, and Taylor Cook all earned match wins in the victory over St. Francis.
PRESEASON POLLS
On February 6th, the Northeast Conference announced the annual Preseason Coaches' Poll for women's tennis in which the Mountaineers were tabbed to finish 7th in a tie with St. Francis Brooklyn. Fairleigh Dickinson was picked to dethrone three-time defending champion Long Island, receiving the most first-place votes with four. For more information on this year's preseason polls, click here.
UPCOMING SCHEDULE
The Mount women's tennis team will return home next weekend to take on Merrimack and the University of Sciences on Saturday, February 22nd. The match against Merrimack will start at 1:00 p.m. and the battle verse USciences begins at 4:00 p.m.
