NEWS AND NOTES

  • Mount St. Mary's led wire-to-wire in a 79-52 victory over Central Connecticut on Saturday at Knott Arena.  Jalen Gibbs led four Mountaineers in double figures with 20 points, hitting 5-of-10 from three-point range.  Malik Jefferson added 17 points and 11 rebounds in his third double-double of the year while Nana Opoku chipped in 11 points, seven boards and a season-high six blocks.  The Mount led 42-21 at the half.
  • Jalen Gibbs scored a team-high 20 points in the win over Central Connecticut, the ninth time in his career he has scored 20 or more points in a game.  He needs one more 20-point effort to become the 15th player at the Mount to have 10 games with 20 or more points since the school moved to Division I in 1988-89.  Chris McGuthrie holds the Mount's Division I record with 50 career 20-point games.  Elijah Long, BK Ashe and Michael Watson are just ahead of Gibbs with 10 career 20-point games.
  • Malik Jefferson's 17-point, 11-rebound effort was his third double-double of the season, and the sixth of his Mount career.  His six career double-doubles are tied for the 10th most by a Mount player since the move to NCAA Division I in 1988-89.  Michael Watson tops that list with 15 career double-doubles, followed by Mychal Kearse and Pat Atangana with 13 each.  Jefferson's next double-double will move him into a tie for ninth on the list with Gerben Van Dorpe.
  • Forward Nana Opoku blocked a season-high six shots in the Mount's 79-52 win over Central Connecticut on Saturday.  Opoku has recorded three or more blocks in a game four times this season, including each of the past three games.  In conference play, he leads the NEC with 3.0 blocks per game.
  • The Mountaineers lead the Northeast Conference in field goal percentage defense in league games.  In five NEC games, the Mount is holding the opposition to 40.2 percent shooting.   Overall, the Mount is second in the NEC in scoring defense (65.7) and third in field goal percentage defense (.420).
  • Up next, the Mount hosts Bryant on Saturday, January 25, at 5:00 p.m.
