NEWS AND NOTES

  • The Mountaineers staged a second-half rally, but saw it come up short in an 82-76 loss to American on Tuesday night at Knott Arena.  Trailing by 18 in the second half, the Mount was able to trim the deficit to 61-60 after a Jalen Gibbs traditional three-point play.  The Eagles responded with a 12-to-2 run to push the lead back to double figures, and held on for the win. Omar Habwe came off the bench to pace the Mountaineers with a team-high 17 points while Gibbs added 14 points and six boards.
  • This will be the 17th all-time meeting between the Mount and Navy, but the first since the Mount's 72-65 victory on December 7, 2012.  That game capped a six-year stretch that saw the teams meet each year.  Navy holds a 9-7 edge in the series, including a 5-4 mark at home.
  • The 70-point mark has been a key identifier for the Mountaineers.  The Mount is 1-7 this season and 2-24 under head coach Dan Engelstad when failing to reach the 70-point plateau.  Conversely, the Mountaineers are 2-1 this year and 10-6 under Engelstad when scoring 70 or more.
  • Omar Habwe scored a season-high 17 points off the bench in the Mount's loss to American on Tuesday.  He is the second player to lead the Mount in scoring off the bench this year, joining Vado Morse (Lamar).
  • The Mountaineers have struggled shooting the ball from three-point range this season, converting just 26.1 percent of its three-point attempts. The Mount is just 7-of-37 (.189) from beyond the arc over the past two games after connecting for a season-high 10 three-point field goals in the overtime loss at Grand Canyon.  The Mount has been held to five or fewer three-pointers made in five of the team's 11 games.
  • Up next, the Mount returns home to face Coppin State on Friday, December 27, at 7 pm at Knott Arena.
