NEWS AND NOTES

  • The Mountaineers open their 111th season of basketball against Georgetown.  Mount St. Mary's is coming off a 9-22 season that saw the team finish in ninth place in the Northeast Conference with a 6-12 league mark.    The Mount returns 97 percent of its scoring and 95 percent of its minutes played from the 2018-19 season.
  • The Mount's last season-opening win was an 84-76 win at Loyola (Md.) on Nov. 14, 2008.  Since then, the Mount has lost its past 10 season openers (all on the road).  The list of opponents in order is Oklahoma, Dayton, Marquette, Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Arizona, Maryland, West Virginia, Marquette and NC State.
  • Mount St. Mary's is looking for its first win over Georgetown since a 93-79 victory on Jan. 18, 1961.  The Hoyas hold a 23-5 lead in the all-time series, including a 4-0 mark since the Mount moved to NCAA Division I in 1988-89.  The Hoyas defeated the Mount, 102-68, on November 15, 2017, in the last matchup between the two squads.
  • Mount St. Mary's was picked to finish in seventh place in the annual Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.  Long Island has been tabbed as the preseason NEC favorites, followed by Sacred Heart, Saint Francis U, Fairleigh Dickinson, Robert Morris, Bryant, Mount St. Mary's, St. Francis Brooklyn, Wagner, Central Connecticut and Merrimack.
  • Vado Morse was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year last season.  He joins Chris McGuthrie (1992-93) and Shivaughn Wiggins (2012-13) as the only Mount players win the award.  A six-time NEC Rookie of the Week selection, Morse averaged 14.7 points, 2.9 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game this season.  He increased his numbers in league play, averaging 16.9 points, 3.6 assists and 3.2 rebounds in NEC games.
  • The Mountaineers host Gettysburg on Saturday, November 9, for the home opener.  Tip-off for that game is set for 7:00 p.m.  For tickets, contact the Mount Ticket Office at 301-447-5700.
