NEWS AND NOTES

  • The Mountaineers lost at UAB, 58-51, on Wednesday night to fall to 1-4 on the season.  In a hard-fought defensive battle, the Mount's Damian Chong Qui converted back-to-back buckets to tie the score at 51-51.  UAB's Jalen Benjamin broke the tie with a three-pointer with 1:45 left, and then hit 4-of-4 at the line in the final 29 seconds to complete the scoring.  Jalen Gibbs led the Mount with 15 points while Nana Opoku chipped in 13.  Malik Jefferson notched his second double-double of the year with 10 points and 11 boards.  The Mount held UAB to 34.4 percent shooting in the game.
  • The Mountaineers are 0-1 all-time against Kentucky.  The only meeting between the two teams came in the First Round of the 1995 NCAA Tournament with the Wildcats posting a 113-67 victory on March 16 at the Pyramid in Memphis, Tenn.  Tony Delk led Kentucky with 20 points while Walter McCarty added 17 points and 11 rebounds.  Chris McGuthrie led the Mount with 20 points while Riley Inge chipped in 15 points and eight assists.
  • The Mountaineers are 0-3 all-time against teams from the Southeastern Conference.  The Mount lost to Auburn (89-83) in its second-ever NCAA Division I game on Nov. 26, 1988, fell to Kentucky in the 1995 NCAA Tournament (113-67) and lost at Arkansas on Nov. 28, 2016 (89-76).
  • Mount St. Mary's was picked to finish in seventh place in the annual Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll.  Long Island has been tabbed as the preseason NEC favorites, followed by Sacred Heart, Saint Francis U, Fairleigh Dickinson, Robert Morris, Bryant, Mount St. Mary's, St. Francis Brooklyn, Wagner, Central Connecticut and Merrimack.
  • The Mountaineers are holding opponents to 65.8 points per game this season, including holding three of the past four opponents under 60 points.  The Mount held UAB to 34.4 percent shooting on Wednesday, and is holding opponents this season to 42.1 percent from the field.
