Box Score Teaneck, N.J. (November 10, 2019)--Mount St. Mary's lost at Fairleigh Dickinson, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the 2019 season. The Mount entered the game with a chance to earn the final Northeast Conference playoff spot with a win over the Knights and some help. The Mountaineers finish the 2019 season with a 7-10-0 overall record and a 3-6-0 mark in the NEC.
The first half saw each team with scoring chances in the first 30 minutes with the Mount's best coming from Kyle Davis, who saw his shot in the 28th minute stopped by FDU keeper Jahmali Waite. In the 33rd minute, Seth Walker had a header off a corner kick, but his shot was off the mark to the left of the goal. FDU countered in the 34th minute when Ville Ahola beat Mount keeper Riccardo Zonta on a feed from Diego Arribas to open the scoring. Zonta came up with a pair of saves over the final 10 minutes to keep the score at a 1-0 deficit at the half.
The Knights broke the game open with four second-half goals to pull away for the victory. Adrian Barajas scored 2:47 into the second half to make it a two-goal lead, and Jared Dillon's goal with 29 minutes remaining pushed the FDU lead to 3-0. Ahola and Gabriele Lanzani rounded out the scoring.
Zonta made eight saves for the Mount in the game while Waite posted seven saves for Fairleigh Dickinson. The Knights outshot the Mount, 25-20, in the game, while holding a 13-to-7 edge in shots on goal.
With the win, Fairleigh Dickinson (7-8-2, 3-4-2 NEC) earns the final NEC playoff spot, edging out Robert Morris and St. Francis Brooklyn, who both lost today.
The Mount improved its season win total by five this year in the team's second season after the Mount brought back men's soccer in 2018.
