Box Score Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. (February 27, 2016)—Mount St. Mary's lost at St. Francis Brooklyn, 55-49, in the final game of the regular season on Saturday afternoon at the Pope Physical Education Center. With the loss, the Mount falls to 13-18 overall and 10-8 in the Northeast Conference.
The two teams will play a rematch on Wednesday, March 2, in the NEC Tournament Quarterfinals. The Mount earned the No. 5 seed in the NEC Tournament and will play at the No. 4 seed Terriers.
The Mount's Junior Robinson (Mebane, N.C.) tied the game at 43-43 with 6:02 remaining. St. Francis Brooklyn, however, scored the next six points to take control. Tyreek Jewell hit a pair of free throws, Antonio Jenifer scored in the paint, and Amdy Fall hit a 15-foot jumper to give St. Francis Brooklyn the six-point lead.
Mount St. Mary's fought back on a Robinson drive and a BK Ashe (Washington, D.C.) bucket in transition to cut the deficit to 49-47 with 2:43 remaining. The Terriers (15-16, 11-7 NEC) responded with Jewell breaking free on the press for a dunk to make it 51-47.
The Mountaineers had several chances over the next minute to cut into the deficit, but could not convert. Jenifer hit a pair of free throws and then a dunk off a turnover to seal the win.
Elijah Long (Mississauga, Ont.) led the Mountaineers with 16 points and eight rebounds in the game while Ashe added 10 points. Robinson chipped in eight points while Chris Wray (Shelby, N.C.) pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
Jenifer had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Terriers, Yunus Hopkinson 12, and Fall 10 points, nine rebounds and six blocks.
The Mount shot just 28.8 percent from the floor in the game, including 8-of-37 (.216) in the second half. St. Francis Brooklyn was 11-of-17 (.647) at the foul line while the Mountaineers were 3-of-3.
Mount St. Mary's used a 6-0 run to take an early 6-2 advantage in the game. After St. Francis Brooklyn scored the next six points, Long buried a three-pointer to give the Mountaineers a 9-8 advantage.
The Terriers, though, went on an 11-2 run over the next nine and a half minutes to grab their biggest lead of the game at 20-11 with just under six minutes left in the half. Hopkinson scored 10 of his team's 20 points.
The Mount, though, closed the first half with a 19-to-4 run to take a 30-24 lead at the break. Long started the spurt with a three-point play, with Ashe adding a three-pointer to cut the St. Francis Brooklyn lead to 20-17.
After a Tyreek Jewell jumper, the Mount scored the next nine points. Long hit a jumper, Ashe converted a drive and then a three-point basket, and Long scored in the paint again to take a 26-22 advantage. Antonio Jenifer momentarily slowed the run with a bucket for the Terriers, but Long scored on a drive to the basket, and Graves scored right before the end of the half for a 30-24 lead.
Long was sensational for the Mount in the first half, scoring 16 points while adding five rebounds. Ashe added eight points in the half while Wray collected seven rebounds. Hopkinson scored 10 points for St. Francis Brooklyn in the opening 20 minutes.
