Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (December 22, 2016)--The offense was clicking on Thursday night as Mount St. Mary's cruised to an 87-49 win over Coppin State at Knott Arena. The Mountaineers shot 68.1 percent from the floor while hitting 16-of-25 from three-point range in the victory.
It was the second-best shooting night for the Mount since the team moved to NCAA Division I in 1988-89. The record is 68.6 percent set in a 104-83 win over Norfolk State on January 3, 2014. The Mountaineers recorded 24 assists on 32 field goals in the game.
The Mount (2-11) went on a 22-to-5 run to take a 30-13 advantage to take control of the contest. After a Mawdo Sallah free throw broke an 8-8 tie, Will Miller, Junior Robinson and Miles Wilson each connected on three-pointers to make it 18-10. Miller added two more threes during the run that was capped by an Elijah Long lay-up that gave the Mount a 17-point lead with 6:47 left in the opening half.
Leading 37-19, three different players (Miller, Long and Wilson) nailed three-pointers on consecutive possessions to build the lead to 46-19, and the Mount went to the locker room with a 48-21 advantage.
The Mount shot a sizzling 70.4 percent (19-of-27) from the field in the first half, converting 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) from three-point range.
The second half was pretty much a repeat of the first half as the Mount held its biggest lead of the game, 80-38, after a Bryce Thurston three-pointer with 7:03 remaining.
Miller led the Mount with 16 points, converting 5-of-7 from three-point range in the win. Robinson added 15 points and five assists with Long chipping in 13 points, five assists and five rebounds. Wilson went 4-for-4 from the field while hitting all three of his three-point attempts for 11 points while Chris Wray stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks.
Keith Shivers led Coppin State (1-14) with 10 points and five rebounds.
The Mount finished the game 32-of-47 (.681) from the field and 16-of-25 (.640) from three-point range. The 16 three-point field goals are tied for the third-most in a single game in Mount history. Coppin State shot 32.8 percent overall and was 2-of-15 (.133) from beyond the arc.
Mount St. Mary's opens Northeast Conference play on Thursday, December 29, at LIU Brooklyn. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. at the Steinberg Wellness Center.
