Box Score Lewisburg, Pa. (December 19, 2016)—Junior Robinson scored a game-high 20 points, but Mount St. Mary's fell at Bucknell, 81-65, on Monday night. The game was tied with nine minutes remaining before the Bison used a late run to secure the win.
Trailing 40-32 at the half, the Mount (1-11) opened the second half with an 8-to-2 run to cut the deficit to 42-40. Elijah Long started the run with a bucket while Miles Wilson scored a tough lay-up in the paint to cap the spurt. After Bucknell answered with a 7-2 run to take a 49-42 lead, the Mount scored the next eight points to take its first lead of the game, 50-49.
A Chris Wray free throw opened the run ahead of a Will Miller three-point basket. Long scored in the paint off a steal, and Nwandu hit a pair of free throws to give the Mount its first lead, 50-49, with 11:35 left in the game.
Bucknell's Zach Thomas scored the next five points in the game to give Bucknell a 54-50 lead, but Robinson and Wilson recorded back-to-back baskets to tie the game with just over nine minutes left.
Bucknell went on a 6-0 run to take a 60-54 lead, but the Mount was able to cut the deficit to 61-57 after a Wilson free throw with 6:04 remaining. The Bison then used a 15-to-2 run to secure the win.
Robinson finished the game 5-of-8 from the field, 3-of-4 from three-point range, and 7-of-7 at the line en route to his game-high 20 points. Wilson added 14 points and Long 13 points, five rebounds and three steals in the game.
Bucknell's Thomas finished with 16 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, four blocks and three steals. Kimball Mackenzie added 16 points while Nana Foulland chipped in 14 points and nine rebounds for the Bison.
The Mountaineers shot just 32.7 percent from the field, but were 21-of-25 (.840) at the charity stripe in the game. Bucknell shot 53.7 percent overall, and held a 36-to-26 edge on the boards.
In the opening half, Greg Alexander hit a pair of three-pointers while Robinson added a triple of his own as the score was tied 11-11 after the first four minutes. A Robinson three-point play with 12:18 left in the half cut the Mount deficit to 17-16, but Bucknell responded by scoring the next 10 points to take its biggest lead of the half, 27-16.
Long nailed a three-pointer and Robinson hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 27-21, but Bucknell was able to stretch the lead back to double digits at 32-21 with 6:45 left in the first half.
The Mount fought back again, using a Long three-pointer, a Wilson bucket, and a Long free throw to make it 32-27. The Bison pushed the lead back to double digits before a Khalid Nwandu bucket made it 40-32 at the half.
Bucknell shot 17-of-29 (58.6 percent) in the first half while holding a 16-10 edge on the boards. The Mount was 10-for-26 (38.5 percent) from the floor in the opening half, but was 5-of-12 (41.7 percent) from three-point range.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Thursday, December 22, when Coppin State visits Knott Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. and the first 500 fans will receive a Mount Christmas Ornament.
