Box Score Elon, N.C. (November 26, 2015)—BK Ashe (Washington, D.C.) scored 19 of his career-high 25 points in the second half, but Elon escaped with a 79-74 win over Mount St. Mary's on Thanksgiving Day at Alumni Gym. Junior Robinson (Mebane, N.C.) added 19 points with Taylor Danaher (Fredericksburg, Va.) chipping in 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocks in the game for the Mountaineers.
Trailing by 12 points with just under 16 minutes remaining, the Mount used an impressive 26-to-9 scoring run to take a 63-56 lead with 7:27 left in the game. Danaher scored four consecutive points with Ashe adding five as the Mount cut the deficit to 51-46.
Trailing by six, Ashe converted a lay-up and a three-pointer ahead of a Gregory Graves three-point basket that gave the Mount a 57-56 advantage, its first lead since early in the first half. Ashe added another three-pointer with Danaher converted a traditional three-point play to push the Mountaineers lead to 63-56.
Elon was able to fight back, evening the score at 67-67 with 4:40 left in the contest. Robinson, who hails from nearby Mebane, N.C., scored in the pain with 3:56 on the clock to give the Mount a two-point lead. Elon answered with a pair of free throws at the 2:11 mark to even the score again.
Ashe then gave the Mount a 71-69 advantage with an emphatic dunk on a baseline drive with 1:48 left in the game. The Mountaineers had a couple of chances to stretch the lead, but came up short on their possessions. Elon's Tyler Seibring took advantage, drilling a long three-pointer with 44.7 seconds on the clock to give the Phoenix a 72-71 lead.
On the Mount's next possession, Ashe was called for a charge on a drive to the basket, and Elon's Luke Eddy was fouled, and he connected on a pair of free throws with 32.2 seconds left. Ashe missed a three-pointer with 20 seconds left, and Elon was able to hit 3-of-4 at the line to make it 77-71. Robinson kept the Mount in the game with a long three-pointer with 1.3 seconds left to make it a three-point game, but Tanner Samson was able to seal the win for Elon with two free throws with 0.8 seconds left.
The Mount shot 44.4 percent from the field in the game, including 51.6 (16-of-31) in the second half. The Mountaineers were just 5-of-22 (.227) from three-point range. Elon shot 41.0 percent overall and was 23-of-29 at the line (.793) in the game.
Robinson scored 10 points in the opening half to lead the Mount while Danaher added four points and five rebounds. The Mount forced Elon into 11 first-half turnovers while holding the Phoenix to 38.7 percent shooting from the field. Elon held a 38-to-29 lead at the break.
The Mount will face Furman tomorrow at 4:30 p.m.
