Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (March 1, 2014)—Seniors Sam Prescott, Rashad Whack and Julian Norfleet combined to score 62 points to lead Mount St. Mary's past Saint Francis University, 78-55, on Senior Day at Knott Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Prescott tallied 26 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double as a Mountaineer. The transfer from Marist had a double-double against Canisius on Dec. 5, 2010. Whack finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals while Norfleet added 17 points and four assists.
Norfleet helped the Mount (13-16, 9-7 NEC) take control of the game from the start, pouring in 15 points over the first 11 minutes, to stake the Mountaineers to a 24-14 advantage.
Ollie Jackson hit a three-pointer for Saint Francis (9-20, 7-9) to cut the Mount's lead to 24-17, but a 19-to-4 Mountaineers run stretched the lead to 43-19. Prescott and Whack sparked the run, combining to score 15 of the 19 points in the decisive scoring spurt. The Mount held a 45-25 lead at the half.
The Red Flash scored the first four points of the second half, forcing the Mount to call a 30-second timeout. Mount St. Mary's responded to the mini-run by scoring 15 of the next 16 points to take a commanding 60-30 lead with 15:22 left in the game. Prescott scored eight consecutive points for the Mount in the run.
The Red Flash cut the Mount lead to 60-43, but Prescott sealed the win by scoring the next three baskets, and the Mount cruised to the victory from there.
Mount St. Mary's shot 53.6 percent from the floor in the game, and was 10-of-21 (.481) from three-point range. The Red Flash shot 40.0 percent and was 5-for-20 (.250) from beyond the arc.
The Mount finished fourth in the NEC standings, and will host fifth-seeded St. Francis Brooklyn in the NEC Tournament Quarterfinals at Knott Arena on Wednesday, March 5. Tip-off for that game will be at 7:00 p.m.
