Mount St. Mary's Storms Past Central Connecticut State, 87-76, with Huge Second Half Comeback

New Britain, Conn. (Feb. 20, 2014)—Mount St. Mary's stormed back from a 15-point halftime deficit to post an 87-76 win at Central Connecticut State on Thursday night.  Sam Prescott led four Mountaineers in double figures with 19 points.

The Mountaineers trailed 45-30 at the half, and faced a 52-41 deficit with just over 16 minutes left in the contest.  Mount St. Mary's surged to the lead, scoring 24 of the next 30 points, to grab a 65-58 lead.  Prescott scored seven points during the decisive run, including a three-pointer with 9:33 left that gave the Mount a 61-58 advantage.

Prescott added a lay-up, and Taylor Danaher converted a hook shot in the lane to close out the run.  The Blue Devils (9-17, 5-8), winners of their last three games, hung tough, scoring the next five points to cut the gap to 65-63.

Leading 67-65 with just under five minutes left, the Mount sealed the win with a 10-1 run for a 77-66 advantage.  Gregory Graves and Rashad Whack each hit a pair of free throws to start the run ahead of a tough step back jumper from 15-feet for a 73-65 lead.

Prescott finished the game with 19 points, eight boards and three assists to pace the Mountaineers.  Danaher added 17 points and eight rebounds, hitting all nine of his free throw attempts.  Whack chipped in 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks with Norfleet adding 16 points for the Mount.

Faronte Drakeford led CCSU with 17 points while Malcolm McMillan added 16 points and five assists.

The Mount (11-14, 7-5 NEC) shot 55.6 percent in the second half, hitting 6-of-11 (.545) from three-point range and 21-of-21 at the charity stripe.  The Mount outscored CCSU 57-31 in the second half. 

After falling behind 7-2 in the early going, the Mountaineers went on a 13-to-4 run to grab a four-point lead.  Danaher started the run with a bucket in the post, and finished it with a pair of free throws.

From there, Central Connecticut State took control of the game, rattling off a 24-to-5 run for a 35-20 advantage.  Vinales and De'Angelo Speech each had five points in the scoring run for the Blue Devils that was capped by a McMillan rebound dunk.

The Blue Devils were able to maintain the margin, going to the locker room with a 45-30 advantage after Speech's banked three-pointer at the buzzer.

CCSU shot 55.9 percent from the floor in the opening half, including 6-of-11 (.545) from three-point range.  The Mount struggled in the half, shooting 35.1 percent while hitting just 2-of-11 (.182) from beyond the arc.

The Mount rounds out its five-game road trip at Wagner on Saturday, February 22, with a 4:00 p.m. game.
