Box Score Emmitsburg, Md. (February 1, 2014)—Sam Prescott's three-pointer with 0.3 seconds remaining lifted Mount St. Mary's to a 95-92 victory to cap a frenzied final minute of action at Knott Arena. Rashad Whack led the Mount with 26 points while Julian Norfleet added 24 points in the win.
Leading 88-86 with 28.9 seconds left, Prescott found Gregory Graves open for a slam dunk to give the Mount a four-point lead. LIU Brooklyn's E.J. Reed answered on the other end with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one. The Blackbirds then fouled Prescott, who hit both free throws to put the Mountaineers ahead, 92-89.
After a timeout, LIU's Jason Brickman drove the lane and kicked the ball back to Reed, who banked home a game-tying three-pointer with 8.6 seconds on the clock, setting up Prescott's game-winning bucket.
On the winning play, the Mount got the ball to Norfleet, who drove to the middle and pitched the ball to a wide-open Prescott on the left wing. Prescott buried the shot to give the Mount (9-12, 5-3 NEC) a 95-92 lead with 0.3 seconds on the clock. LIU's Iverson Fleming then made a half-court shot, but it was ruled after the buzzer, and the Mount earned the victory.
It was the second game in a row that Prescott has been the hero for the Mount. In the Mount's 87-82 overtime win against Fairleigh Dickinson, Prescott tied the game with a three-pointer with 5.4 seconds remaining. His traditional three-point play to open the overtime gave the Mount the lead for good in that win.
Whack was on fire for Mount St. Mary's in the first half, scoring 21 of his game-high 26 points in the opening 20 minutes. The Mountaineers hit eight three-pointers in the first eight minutes of the game to take a 28-20 advantage. The lead was extended to 33-to-24 after a Whack lay-up with 9:54 left in the half. he Blackbirds fought back, tying the game at 35-35 after a Joel Hernandez lay-up. Whack hit a pair of free throws to snap a 38-38 tie, and the Mount eventually went to the locker with a 45-42 lead.
In the second half, Mount St. Mary's extended the lead to eight points on three different occasions, the last coming after a Will Miller three-pointer that made the score 72-64. The Blackbirds (7-14, 2-6 NEC) responded with a 13-to-5 run to tie the game on a Landon Atterberry three-point play with 4:06 on the clock.
After a pair of Norfleet free throws, Brickman scored on a tough lay-up to tie the game again, 79-79, with 3:17 left. The Mount's Taylor Danaher stepped up, scoring the next five points to give the Mount a five-point advantage. The Blackbirds, however, hung tough to set up the exciting ending.
The Mount was 16-of-29 (.552) from three-point range in the win, including 11-of-21 (.524) in the first half. The 11 three-pointers made in the opening half matched a school record.
Whack finished 9-for-15 from the field and was 5-for-9 from three-point range for his game-high 26 points. Norfleet added 24 points, hitting 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, while tallying six assists and three steals in the win. Graves chipped in a double-double off the bench with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Prescott finished with seven points, five steals, four rebounds and four assists in the win.
Reed led LIU Brooklyn with 24 points, eight rebounds and three steals while Brickman, the NCAA assist leader, added 12 points and 12 assists. Fleming and Troy Joseph each scored 18 points for LIU in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Thursday, February 6, with a 9:00 p.m. game at Sacred Heart. That game will be televised live on the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN).
