Towson, Md. (September 6, 2013) -- The Mount St. Mary's women's tennis team kicked off the 2013 fall season on Friday afternoon at the Tiger Classic hosted by Towson. In matches that do not count toward the team's overall record, the Mount dropped the first match to George Mason, 5-1, and the second match to Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 4-1.
VS. GEORGE MASON
Junior Jennifer Smith came away a winner in her No. 4 singles match, taking down George Mason's Mina Saygi in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
At No. 2 singles, senior co-captain Liz Rossi started on the right foot with a 6-3 win in the first set against Morgan Yang. Rossi's momentum did not carry over, however, with Yang claiming a 6-1 win in set two to pull even before winning the decisive third set, 10-8.
The Patriots took both doubles matches as well as the two other singles matches.
VS. IUP
Playing in just their second collegiate match, Mount freshmen Erin Benefiel and Elizabeth Milano teamed up for a hard-fought 9-7 win against Sophie Butland and Roxana Veh in the only doubles match against IUP.
IUP was able to come away with wins in all four of the singles matches on the day. Of all the matches, Rossi again forced a tiebreaker in her No. 2 singles match. Facing Tanya Timko, Rossi fell behind 6-2 in the first set and was able to fight back for a 7-5 win in the second set. Rossi's comeback fell just short with Timko grabbing a 12-10 win in the third set for the victory.
The Tiger Classic concludes tomorrow with the Mount taking on in-state rival Towson at noon and Delaware at 1:30 p.m.
