Lewisburg, Pa. (September 20, 2013) – The Mount women's tennis team finished the first day of the Bucknell Invitational on Friday with five singles victories as well as one doubles win.
Junior Jennifer Smith earned a doubles win alongside her sister Kelly Smith, and also added a singles win on day one. The Smith sisters defeated Bloomsburg's Maddi Graziani and Alyssa Liples, 8-1, in the opening round of the north draw.
Jennifer Smith went 1-1 in singles on the day in the gray draw, beginning with a 7-6, 7-5 win over Villanova's Annie Cognetti in round one. In her second match against Gianna Mitchell from Villanova, Smith fell short, 6-4, 6-2.
Competing in the white draw, freshman Erin Benefiel took down Bloomsburg's Liples in straight-sets, 6-1, 6-0 then dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Bucknell's Michelle Urbinati.
Danielle Nguyen and Taylor D'Agostino came away with first round singles victories in the blue draw on Friday. Nguyen was a three-set winner versus Natalie Greenholt of Bloomsburg, while D'Agostino won in straight sets against Lydia Colvin.
In a come-from-behind victory in the black draw, Isabella Draper scored a 1-6, 6-3, 10-7 victory over Bloomsburg's Samantha Smith.
The competition will begin again tomorrow at 9:30 a.m.
