Mount St. Mary's Downs Monmouth, 77-63, to Stretch Win Streak to Six

West Long Branch, N.J. (February 28, 2013)—Mount St. Mary's pulled away for a 77-63 win at Monmouth on Thursday night in Northeast Conference action.  The Mount used a 28-to-11 second-half run to secure the win.

Mount St. Mary's has won six games in a row, and eight of the past nine games to move to 15-13 overall and 10-7 in the NEC.

Leading 46-45 with just over 13 minutes left, freshman Shivaughn Wiggins stole the ball and converted the lay-up for a three-point lead.  Wiggins then converted a traditional three-point play on the next possession to put the Mount ahead, 51-45.

Rashad Whack added eight points in the decisive run that was capped by a pair of Raven Barber free throws that gave the Mount a 76-57 advantage with 4:24 remaining.

Wiggins led the Mount with 16 points while Julian Norfleet added 14 points, five assists and three blocks.  Kelvin Parker had a strong game off the bench, scoring 13 points while adding seven rebounds. Whack chipped in 11 points, seven rebounds and three assists as well.

Ed Waite led Monmouth (10-20, 5-12 NEC) with 15 points while Max DiLeo added 12 points, five rebounds and five steals in the loss.

The Mount shot 49.1 percent from the floor in the game, including 8-of-24 (.333) from three-point range.  Monmouth shot just 37.3 percent from the field, but held a 41-to-36 edge on the boards.

The Mount came out flying in the first half, pushing to an 18-8 lead in the opening 5:32 of the game.  Kristijan Krajina had five points during the early scoring streak.

Norfleet drained a three-pointer with 11:09 left to give the Mountaineers a 25-16 advantage, but the Hawks closed out the half on a 19-to-10 run to even the score.

The Mount shot 48.1 percent in the opening half, but were outrebounded 25-to-16 by Monmouth.  The Hawks held a 14-to-2 edge in second chance points.

The Mount remained in sixth place in the Northeast Conference standings with one league game remaining.  Mount St. Mary's concludes the regular season on Saturday, March 2, with a 4:30 p.m. game at Fairleigh Dickinson.

Game Notes:  The Mount holds a 32-23 advantage in the all-time series, and has won eight of the past 10 games in the series…The Northeast Conference Tournament begins on Wednesday, March 6, with the top four teams earning home games.
