Box Score Morgantown, W. Va. (November 8, 2013)—Julian Norfleet scored a team-high 19 points, but Mount St. Mary's fell to West Virginia, 77-62, in the season opener on Friday night.
Kristijan Krajina and Will Miller added nine points each for the Mount while Gregory Graves had nine rebounds in the loss. Juwan Staten led West Virginia with 22 points and six assists while Eron Harris added 19 points in the game.
The Mount remained within striking in the second half, but could not put together a run to really cut into the WVU's nine-point halftime lead.
The Mount shot 40.0 percent from the floor in the game and was 7-for-21 from three-point range. Mount St. Mary's held a 30-28 advantage on the boards. West Virginia shot 56.0 percent overall.
In the opening half, the Mount was right in the game after Norfleet and Rashad Whack connected for three-pointers on consecutive possessions to cut the WVU lead to 25-22. West Virginia, however, answered with a 12-to-4 run to take its biggest lead of the half, 37-26, and went to the locker room with a 41-32 lead.
Norfleet paced the Mount with eight points and five assists in the half while Graves added six points and six boards. The Mount shot 37.0 percent (10-of-27) in the half while West Virginia was 16-of-24 (66.7 percent). Harris had 10 first-half points to pace WVU while Staten added 10 points and four assists.
Next up for the Mount is a trip to Villanova on Wednesday, November 13. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
Game Notes: West Virginia holds a 4-0 lead in the all-time series…The Mountaineers are 0-6 all-time against teams in the Big 12 Conference…The Mount is now 3-23 all-time in season openers since moving to NCAA Division I in 1988-89, including a 1-22 mark on the road.
