Mount St. Mary's Edged by UMBC, 90-84, in Overtime

Baltimore, Md. (November 17, 2013)—Julian Norfleet scored a career-high 28 points, but Mount St. Mary's saw UMBC rally from a 23-point second-half deficit to earn a 90-84 win in overtime on Sunday afternoon. 

Mount St. Mary's (0-4) had its biggest lead of the game, 61-38, with 14:17 left after a Rashad Whack three-point basket.  UMBC, however, outscored the Mount, 37-14, the rest of the way to force the extra period.

UMBC (2-2) started its comeback with an 18-4 run that was capped by an Aaron Morgan basket that cut the lead to 66-56 with 6:39 left.  UMBC continued to chip away, making it a four-point game, 72-68, with 1:14 left after a pair of Charles Taylor free throws.

Norfleet was fouled with 51.7 seconds on the clock, and hit both to put the lead back to six.  UMBC's Chase Plummer countered with a three-pointer with 37.1 seconds on the clock to make it a one-possession game, 74-71.

Freshman Khalid Nwandu was fouled, and hit one-of-two for a 75-71 lead.  Rodney Elliott then converted a drive, and the Mount turned it over, giving UMBC the ball with 26.7 seconds on the clock.

Joey Getz then tied the score when he drove to the lane and hit with 10.9 seconds on the clock.  The Mount had a chance to win in regulation, but Will Miller's desperation three-pointer at the buzzer was off the mark.

In overtime, the Mount scored the first two points on a pair of Norfleet free throws, but a steal and bucket by Taylor and a Plummer three-pointer gave UMBC an 80-77 lead with 2:28 left in overtime.  Elliott then had the key basket as he scored on a drive for an 84-79 lead with 1:07 left after an offensive rebound allowed UMBC to retain possession.

Norfleet finished with 28 points, six assists and four rebounds to pace the Mount while Whack finished with 20 points, hitting 7-of-11 from the field.  Freshmen Byron Ashe (11 points) and Will Miller (10 points) also reached double figures for the Mount.

Elliott led UMBC with 26 points, six rebounds and five assists while Taylor added 17 points and seven boards.

The Mount shot 50.0 percent in the game, but committed a season-high 20 turnovers.  UMBC shot 40.0 percent overall, but held a commanding 53-33 advantage on the boards.

After UMBC scored on the first possession of the game, the Mount rattled off an 11-0 run to grab an 11-2 lead.  Sam Prescott and Will Miller each nailed three-pointers during the scoring run.

After four consecutive UMBC points, the Mount went on a 14-4 spurt that was capped by a Norfleet basket and a Whack three-pointer.

The Mount stretched the lead to 45-28 after a pair of Miller free throws before taking a 46-32 advantage at the half.  Whack led the Mount with 13 points in the half while Norleet added nine and Miller seven.

The Mountaineers shot 62 percent from the field in the opening half while collecting eight steals on 11 UMBC turnovers.

The Mount concludes its season-opening five-game road trip at Maryland-Eastern Shore on Wednesday.  Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.

Game Notes:  The Mount is 29-10 all-time against UMBC…This was the Mount's first game at UMBC since Dec. 5, 2002.
