Box Score Provo, Utah (November 15, 2013)—Rashad Whack scored a team-high 19 points, but it was not enough as Mount St. Mary's fell at BYU, 108-76, at the Marriott Center on Friday night. The Cougars took a 20-point lead at the half to earn the victory.
Whack finished the game with 19 points, six rebound and four steals while hitting 5-of-15 from the floor. Julian Norfleet chipped in 17 points and six assists while freshman Bryan Ashe added a career-best 11 points in his first collegiate start. Fellow freshman Khalid Nwandu had a solid floor game with six assists and four rebounds.
BYU had six players reach double figures in the game, led by Anson Winder's 22-point night. Eric Mika added 20 points while Kyle Collinsworth chipped in 13 points and 10 boards for a double-double.
BYU shot 60 percent from the floor in the game while the Mount was 26-of-70 for 37 percent. Mount St. Mary's was 12-of-40 (.300) from three-point range. The 40 three-point attempts are the second-most in school history. The record of 42 was set against UMBC on Feb. 11, 2003.
The Mount (0-3) grabbed an early 11-9 lead at the first media timeout after a Miller three-pointer. After five consecutive BYU points, Whack three-point goal evened the score at 14-14 before the Cougars went on a 23-to-5 run to take a 37-19 advantage. The Cougars stretched the lead to 54-34 at the half on back-to-back three-point baskets.
BYU (3-0) took advantage of 15 first half Mount St. Mary's fouls, going 12-of-17 at the charity stripe in the opening half while shooting 51.4 percent from the floor. The Mount hit 38.2 percent in the opening 20 minutes, including 6-of-19 (.316) from three-point range. Wahck led the Mount with eight points while Prescott and Norfleet chipped in seven each.
The Mount returns to action on Sunday, November 17, with a 2:00 p.m. game at UMBC.
