Box Score MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. - Robert Morris closed the game on a14-2 run
and scored the decisive basket with 1.9 seconds left en route to a
61-59 win against Mount St. Mary's in Northeast Conference (NEC)
women's basketball action on Saturday.
Jacqueline Brewer (Martinsburg, W. Va./Martinsburg) paced the
Mount (8-10, 4-3 NEC) with 19 points while Selina Mann
(Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) tallied 15 points, seven rebounds,
seven assists and four steals in the loss.
Mann capped a Mountaineer run that saw the senior score eight
points in a 10-0 run with a triple with 7:30 left to hand Mount St.
Mary's a 57-47 advantage. The Colonials (4-14, 3-4 NEC) then closed
the game by scoring 14 of the final 16 points to come away with the
victory.
Randi Jackson started the decisive rally with a jumper at 6:24
before Kelly Hartwell nailed a jumper at 5:03 to trim the margin to
57-51. Brewer momentarily halted the spurt at the four-minute mark
with two free throws, but Robert Morris scored the final 10 points
of the game.
Artemis Spanou made two free throws at 3:03 and Lou Mataly
drilled a 3-ball at 2:21 before Spanou drained a jumper at 1:42 and
tied the game at 59 by making 1 of 2 at the free throw line with 56
ticks on the clock. After a tie up that gave the Colonials the ball
thanks to the jump ball with 28 seconds left, Mataly drove the lane
from the left side and kissed the glass with 1.9 seconds left to
secure the victory.
After Mount St. Mary's grabbed a 10-point lead, the squad went
0-for-6 from the field in the final seven minutes and 30 seconds
with six turnovers.
Mataly paced the Colonials with 22 points. Spanou added 20
points and 12 rebounds while Anna Gailite chipped in 11 points in
the winning effort.
The last time the Mount won at the Sewall Center, Sandra
Andresson drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer in 2008 to give the
Mountaineers the victory. Robert Morris used had the heroics this
time around to rally to steal one from Mount St. Mary's.
The Mount grabbed a six-point lead to start the second half
thanks to 10-2 run sparked by four points from Tara Lonergan
(Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side). The Colonials came back to
even the score at 47 thanks to a 10-4 spurt.
The Mountaineers then rolled off 10 unanswered points to grab a
57-47 edge. Mann started the run with a jumper at 10:05 and then
drained a trey at 9:40. After Kayla Grossett (Toronto,
Ontario/David and Mary Thompson C.I.) hit a jumper at 8:36,. Mann
nailed her third 3-pointer of the day at 7:31 for a 10-point lead.
Fueled by five points from Spanou, Robert Morris closed the game
with a 14-2 run to come away with the win.
The first half was a seesaw battle, but Robert Morris went into
halftime with a 33-31 lead.
Thanks to three treys, the Colonials jumped out to an 11-5 lead
with 17:22 remaining. With Robert Morris holding a 15-10 advantage,
the Mount went on a 12-2 run to take a 22-17 edge with 7:45 left in
the first half.
Mann started the run with a layup at 14:25 before Lonergan
scored in the paint at 13:44 to make it a one-point game. After
Spanou converted two free throws with 11:56 on the clock, the
Mountaineers scored eight unanswered points. Brewer connected on
consecutive 3-balls at 10:47 and 9:56 before Grossett drained a
jumper at 7:45 for a five-point lead.
The Colonials came back to tie the game at 24 before the two
teams traded the lead back and forth six times in the final four
minutes of the half. Mataly gave Robert Morris a 33-31 lead going
into the locker room with a triple with 39.2 seconds left.
The Mount finished the road trip 3-2.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Monday at home against
Wagner. Game time is 7 p.m.
