Box Score Washington, D.C. (November 26, 2012)—Sam Prescott and Julian Norfleet each hit clutch three-pointers down the stretch to lead Mount St. Mary's past George Washington, 65-56, on Monday night at the Smith Center. Prescott paced the Mountaineers (2-3) with 15 points in the victory.
Leading 55-54, Prescott drained a three-pointer from the top of the key to extend the Mount's advantage to four with 3:51 left in the game. Norfleet then converted a lay-up in the lane with 2:51 left to for a six-point lead.
Rashad Whack added a free throw before George Washington's Lasan Kromah scored on a lay-up to cut the Mount lead to 61-56 with 1:09 left in the game. On the next possession, Norfleet buried a three-pointer from way beyond the arc as the shot clock was about to expire to seal the win.
After George Washington opened the second half on a 10-2 run to take a four-point lead, the Mount responded with a 9-2 run of its own to grab a 43-40 lead. Whack closed out that spurt with a lay-up and a three-point basket.
From there, the game remained tight with George Washington evening the score at 48-48 with 7:39 left in the contest on a dunk from Isaiah Armwood. Junior Kristijan Krajina came up with a big play for the Mount on the ensuing possession, dunking home a rebound of a Norfleet miss in the lane to put the Mount St. Mary's back in the lead. Xavier Owens then hit a three-pointer to push the lead to 53-48 to set up the final minutes.
Prescott led the Mount with 15 points off the bench, hitting 4-of-7 from three-point range in the win. Norfleet added 12 points while freshman Shivaugn Wiggins chipped in a career-high 11 points off the bench for the Mount.
Kromah led George Washington (2-3) with 18 points with Armwood finishing with 15 points and 11 boards in the loss.
Mayhem was again a factor for the Mount, as the team forced 25 turnovers in the game while hitting 8-of-15 (.533) from three-point range in the victory. The Mountaineers had 15 steals in the victory, including a team-high four by Whack.
The Mountaineers closed the first half on an 8-0 run to take a 32-28 lead at the intermission. Wiggins kick-started the run with a three-pointer and a lay-up off a Whack steal for a 29-28 lead. Prescott then drilled a three-pointer with 19 seconds left in the half to push the lead to four.
After trailing 4-0 to open the game, the Mount went on a 20-9 run to grab a 20-13 advantage. Prescott scored eight points in that stretch, including a pair of three-point baskets. The Colonials responded with a 12-0 spurt for a 25-20 lead.
The Mountaineers shot 50.0 percent (14-of-28) from the field in the first half, including 4-of-9 from three-point range. The Mount defense forced 12 George Washington turnovers that led to 11 points.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday, December 1st, with a 2:00 p.m. game at Binghamton.
Game Notes: George Washington holds a 7-3 lead in the all-time series that dates back to 1920…This was the fourth meeting between the schools since 2002…It was the Mount's first win over a team from the Atlantic 10 Conference since a 77-63 win at Duquesne on Dec. 7, 2002…First-year head coach Jamion Christian scored 20 points in that victory.
