Box Score TOWSON, MD. – Mount St. Mary's and Towson ended in a 1-all standstill in non-conference men's soccer action on Thursday.
Freshman Zoncher Dennis (Swarthmore, Pa./Swarthmore) scored the Mount's (0-1-1) goal in his collegiate debut while Peter Steve (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) recorded five saves in the contest.
"We played a very solid game tonight and I am proud of our players performance," said head coach Rob Ryerson. "We will build on this experience to get ready for our first home game of the year."
Christian Hofer registered the Tigers' tally and netminder John Steele turned away 11 shots on the afternoon.
Mount St. Mary's scored in the 51st minute while Towson knotted the game in the 84th minute and the contest ended in a 1-all result.
Dennis scored the Mount's first goal of the season when he scored on an unsettled situation at 50:02 to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 edge. The freshman made his collegiate debut in the starting lineup.
Phil Martinelli served the ball to Hofer at the 83:20 mark, who found the twine to even the score at 1.
After the Tigers tied the match, the Mount had four shots in the final seven minutes of regulation, but could not convert. Koudzo Komlan (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) and Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) each had their shots stopped by Steele at 83:58 and 85:26 while Wheeler (84:01) and Ian Hendrie (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School) (88:49) each missed wide in that stretch.
In the first overtime period, Wheeler registered the only shot of the frame and it was turned away by Steele at the 91:30 mark.
Jimmy Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) had a scoring chance at 102:02 and Kyle Patrick (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) had the final opportunity of the match as time expired, but both shots were stopped by Steele. Towson had one shot in the final overtime period, but Steve made the stop on Quinn Meehan's shot at 102:55.
Mount St. Mary's outshot Towson 20-13 on the afternoon, including a 7-1 advantage after the Tigers knotted the score.
The Mount returns to action on Sunday when the squad makes its 2011 Waldron Family Stadium against Rider. Match time is 3 p.m.
