Fairfield, Conn. (November 1, 2009)-
The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team lost at Sacred Heart,
5-1, on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the season. Senior
Regina Potter scored her first collegiate goal in the loss.
The Mount finishes the season with a 6-11-2 overall record and a
4-5-1 mark in the Northeast Conference. The six wins are a
four-win improvement over last season.
The Pioneers controlled play in the first half, taking the lead
in the seventh minute of the game. Lindsay Elliott converted a
cross from Samantha Kee to give Sacred Heart the early 1-0
advantage. Leigh Dogmantis added an assist on the play as well.
The Pioneers outshot the Mount, 15-to-4, in the opening half,
however, just two of those shots were on goal.
The Mount evened the score early in the second half on Potter's
first collegiate goal. The senior converted a loose ball in the
box after a throw-in. The Pioneers, however, answered quickly when
Elliott buried a shot from 20 yards out just over two minutes later
to give Sacred Heart a 2-1 advantage
Sacred Heart (8-9-1, 4-5-1 NEC) sealed the win with a three-goal
outburst in a four-minute span later in the second half. Mary
Dick, Elliiott and Kee each scored in the stretch to give Sacred
Heart the 5-to-1 victory.
