Women's Soccer Edged by Long Island, 2-1, on Late Goal

Emmitsburg, Md. (October 2, 2009)--Long Island scored with 3:45 remaining to earn a 2-1 victory over Mount St. Mary's in Northeast Conference women's soccer action at Waldron Family Stadium on campus. The Mount's Meghamn Brennan (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) had tied the game midway through the second half with her first goal of the year.

The Blackbirds (6-3-0, 2-0-0 NEC) took a 1-0 lead at the half on Ariana Calderon's penalty kick with just under 14 minutes left in the opening stanza. LIU's Katie Egan was taken down in the box to draw the penalty kick. Calderon then converted with a shot to the right of Mount goalkeeper Alicia Miller (Lititz, Pa./Warwick).

Just five minutes into the game Mount defender Andrea Bujacich (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) kept Long Island off the scoreboard when she cleared an LIU shot off the goal line. On the play, Kayleigh Morgan took a long pass from Calderon on the right wing and chipped the ball over Miller's head, who had come out to challenge on the play. Bujacich raced to the goal line and cleared the ball out of bounds.

The game remained 1-0 until the 58th minute when the Mount (2-7-2, 0-1-1 NEC) evened the score. The Mountaineers took advantage of a bad LIU clear attempt to earn the equalizing goal. Kelly Baker (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) gathered the ball just outside the penalty area and passed to Emily Menotti (Dover, Pa./Dover) in the middle. Menotti was able to get the ball through to Brennan, who was 1-on-1 with the goalie from six yards out. Brennan was able to finish the play to make the score 1-1.

Long Island's Kim Bishop scored the game winner with 3:45 left on a shot from just inside the top of the penalty area. The play started when Long Island's Caitlin Meadows ripped a shot that was tipped by Mount keeper Miller off the cross bar. The Mount had a chance to clear, but was unable to do so, and Bishop was able to gather the ball in and hit the game-winning shot.

Long Island outshot the Mount, 18-to-6, in the game and held a 4-to-2 advantage in corner kicks. Miller made six saves in the loss while LIU goalkeeper Jennifer Bannon made a pair of saves in the victory.

The Mount returns to action on Sunday, October 4, with a 1:00 p.m. home game against Wagner at Waldron Family Stadium on campus.
