Emmitsburg,
Md. (January 17, 2009)--The backcourt combination of
Jeremy Goode (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day) and
Jean Cajou (Fairfax, Va./Paul VI) combined for 47
points to lead Mount St. Mary's to a 78-67 win over Sacred Heart at
Knott Arena on campus on Saturday afternoon. Goode scored 24
points and Cajou 23 in leading the Mountaineers (9-9, 4-3 NEC) to
their fourth-straight victory.
Sacred Heart (6-11, 3-4 NEC) led most of
the first half, but a 9-2 Mount run to close the half evened the
score 33-33 at the break. Trailing 31-24 after a Mehmet Sahan
bucket with 5:46 left in the half, the Mount rattled off nine
straight points to take the lead.
Goode started the run with a pair of free
throws, Cajou scored on a fast-break basket, and Goode nailed a
three-pointer for the first seven points of the scoring streak.
Will Holland (Houston, Texas./Lamar) added a pair
of free throws to cap the run and give the Mount its first lead of
the contest. Sacred Heart stopped the streak with a Joey Henley
basket to send the game into the half tied at 33-33.
The mount opened the second half with a
22-to-8 spurt to take control of the game. Senior Sam
Atupem (Newport News, Va./Woodside) opened the half with a
traditional three-point play to give the Mount the lead for good.
After Henley hit a pair of free throws, Goode scored 10 of the
Mount's next 12 points, capped by a three-pointer at the 14:20 mark
that gave the Mount a 48-39 advantage.
Goode's fast break lay-up with 12:12 left
in the game capped the run to give the Mount a 55-41 advantage.
The Mount led by double figures the rest of the way, pushing the
lead to as many as 17 points (70-53) with 4:35 left.
Goode finished 9-of-13 from the field and
4-of-5 from three-point range for his game-high 24 points. It was
fifth 20-point game of the season, giving him 12 in his Mount St.
Mary's career. Cajou went 8-for-12 from the floor and 7-of-7 from
the foul line for 23 points in the game. It was his second
20-point game of the year and the sophomore is averaging 19.7
points in his past three games against the Pioneers.
Brothers Shawn Atupem (Newport
News, Va./Woodside) and Sam Atupem each added double
figures in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively, in the
victory. It is the fourth time in their career that the duo has
scored in double figures in the same game.
Sahan paced Sacred Heart with 15 points,
hitting 7-of-7 from the field in the game. Corey Hassan added 13
points and Henley 12 in the loss.
The Mount shot 54.9 percent from the
field in the contest, including a sizzling 65.2 percent in the
second half. The Pioneers converted 49.2 percent from the floor,
but his just 2-of-15 (.133) from three-point range in the game.
The Mount returns to actoin on Thursday,
January 22, with a 7:00 p.m. home game against Central Connecticut
State at Knott Arena.
Game Notes...The Mount
hit 5-of-11 (.455) from three-point range in the game and is now
shooting 43.7 percent from beyond the arc in NEC contests...The
Mount has won six of the past seven games to even its record at
9-9...During the Mount's four-game win streak, the team has a
scoring margin of +17.0 points while converting 51.8 percent from
the field.
