HERSEY, Pa. Jeff
Kingsbury (North Beach, Md./Northern) leads the Northeast
Conference (NEC) Men's Golf Championships by one stroke to help
Mount St. Mary's to a third-place standing after the first round on
Friday.
Kingsbury shot a NEC
Tournament program-record score of 69 to finish the opening round
one stroke ahead of Central Connecticut State's Matt McClure (70).
The sophomore posted a 34 on the front nine and a 35 on the back
nine for his personal-best round and a new NEC Tournament record.
Kingsbury's previous low score was a 71 in the second round of the
Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational on Apr. 18.
The Blue Devils lead
the three-day event with a score of 293, two strokes ahead of
Robert Morris (295) and three strokes ahead of the Mount (296)
while Sacred Heart (297), Saint Francis (Pa.) (300), Long Island
(303), Fairleigh Dickinson (304), Monmouth (304), Quinnipiac (311),
Wagner (326) and St. Francis (N.Y.) (342) rounded out the 11-team
field. The Mountaineers score of 296 in the first round was the
second lowest in team history at the NEC Championships after the
2003 squad carded a 295 in the second round.
Kevin Farrell (Lemoyne,
Pa./Trinity), who earned All-NEC honors last year, posted the
seventh-best NEC Tournament round in program history with a 73 to
finish the first day in 11th place, one stroke from the
Top-10 and four strokes behind Kingsbury. Jacob Wetzel (Blue Ridge
Summit, Pa./Waynesboro Area) is 17th after carding a 75
while Justin Sick (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto) (33rd
place, 79) and Sage Smith (Scottsdale, Ariz./Brophy)
(41st place, 80) rounded out the Mount's five
competitors.
Mount St. Mary's
returns to action on Saturday in the second round of the NEC
Championships at the Hershey Golf Course in Hershey, Pa.
