2008)Jeremy Goode scored 25 points while Kelly
Beidler added his first career double-double with 17 points and 12
rebounds to lead Mount St. Mary's to an 84-76 win over longtime
rival Loyola in the season opener on Friday night.
Leading
77-74 with just under a minute left, Sam Atupem converted a
spin-move in the post to give the Mount a five-point
advantage. Beidler added a
dunk after a Loyola miss to stretch the lead to seven and propel
the Mount to the win.
"I
thought in getting over the first game jitters and the excitement
of a rivalry game, we did a good job executing on offense," said
Mount St. Mary's head coach Milan Brown. The Mount shot 53.7 percent from the
field and hit 6-of-9 from three-point range in the game.
Shawn
Atupem added 13 points off the bench while Sam Atupem chipped in 10
points in the win. Loyola
was paced by Isaac Reid and Jamal Barney, who each scored 14
points.
The
win was the Mount's first in a season opening game since 1998 while
it was the Mount's first road win in the month of November since
1988, a span of 38 games and 20 years.
The
Mount jumped to an early 7-0 lead in the first two minutes of the
contest. A Goode
three-pointer extended the margin to 12-2 at the 15:53 mark of the
first half. Leading by 11
midway through the first half, the Mount saw Loyola score eight
straight points to cut the margin to three, but the Mountaineers
answered with seven straight points of their own to re-establish a
double-digit advantage at 27-17.
Loyola,
however, got back into the game with a 14-2 run, capped by a Jamal
Barney three-pointer, that gave the Greyhounds their first lead,
31-29, with 1:40 on the clock. Goode answered with a three-pointer
and an assist on a Sam Atupem lay-up to give the Mount a 34-33
advantage at the half.
The
Mount returns to action on Monday night with an 8:00 p.m. game at
Virginia Tech.
Game Notes: The game marked the beginning of
the 100th years of Mount basketball...It was the
163rd meeting all-time between the teams with the Mount
holding a 95-68 advantage in the series...It is the most played
rivalry in the state of Maryland...The Mount's last road win in
November came in 1988 over Navy.
