The Mount St. Mary's women's tennis team swept St. Francis
(Pa.), 7-0, in its home opener for the 2006-07 season. With the
victory, the Mount improves to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in the
NEC.
The Mount won all three doubles matches to capture the doubles
point. Katie Muething and Kaitlin Hallahan teamed for an 8-0 win
over Abby Ball and Eva Keresztes at the No. 1 spot. No. 2 doubles
pair Jen Iosue and Chelsea Johnson added an 8-2 win over Roxy
Ionescu and Mallary Palmer while the No. 3 tandem of Ashley Wentzel
and Christine Pace earned an 8-2 win over Danielle Gauthier and
Becky Seybold.
In singles action, the Mount did not drop a set in the six
matches. Hallahan improved to 4-1 this season with a 7-6 (7-2),
6-1 victory over Ionescue at the No. 1 spot. Muething downed Ball,
6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Iosue was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 3
singles over Gauthier.
Freshman Chelsea Johnson improved to 5-0 in her career with a
6-0, 6-1 victory over Keresztes at the No. 4 singles slot while
Whitney Edmonds earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Palmer at No. 5
singles. At No. 6, Alicia Patterson defeated Ashley Zalewski, 6-1,
6-0, to complete the sweep.
The Mount returns to action at St. Joseph's for a 3:00 p.m.
match on Sept. 19.
