Emmitsburg, Md. (October 22, 2006)--The Mount
St. Mary's women's soccer team was edged by Northeast Conference
leader Monmouth, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Andrea Lopez
made a brilliant individual move to score the lone goal of the
game. Mount St. Mary's goalkeeper Anna Lebo made eight saves in
the loss.
Lopez, the leading scorer in the NEC, scored the lone goal of
the game after a sensational individual effort. Just seconds after
Lebo denied Lopez with a point-blank save, Lopez got the ball at
the top of the penalty box, dribbled through two defenders, and
beat Lebo from six yards out for her ninth goal fo the year.
Mount St. Mary's (4-13, 2-5-0 NEC) came out strong in the second
half, generating two great scoring chances. Two minutes into the
half Meghan Haspert was denied by
Monmouth goalkeeper Katie Buffa on a shot from 15 yards out. After
the save, the Mount kept the pressure and junior Jenn Baker
had a shot from 18 yards out, but Buffa came up with the big save
once again.
The Hawks (12-2-2, 6-0-1 NEC) held a 13-to-9 advantage in shots
in the game and had a 7-2 edge in corner kicks. Lebo made eight
saves for the Mount while Buffa made five stops for Monmouth.
The Mount closes out the regular season with a pair of road
games next weekend, at Wagner on Friday and at Long Island on
Sunday.
