The Mount St. Mary's women's soccer team lost to Saint Francis
(Pa.), 1-0, at the MSM Soccer Field on Friday afternoon. The Red
Flash scored with 26:32 remaining to earn the victory on a windy
day.
The Mount controlled play throughout the first half, but could
not get the ball past Saint Francis goalkeeper Melanie Stockman.
Playing with the wind behind their back, the Mount (3-11-0, 1-4-0
NEC) outshot the Red Flash 7-4 in the opening 45 minutes. Saint
Francis (6-5-2, 2-0-2 NEC) did have the best scoring chance in the
half, but Mount keeper Anna Lebo tipped an Ashley Knowles shot over
the crossbar.
In the second half, play remained close until Saint Francis
scored the only goal of the game with 26:32 left in the contest.
Kirsten Hoffsmith beat Lebo from 12 yards out when she finished a
Lauren Popovich cross to the middle. Saint Francis then took
control on the defensive end of the field, holding the Mount to
zero shots in the half.
The Red Flash held an 8-to-7 advantage in shots in the game and
had an 11-1 edge in corner kicks. Lebo made two saves in the loss
while Stockman made four saves for Saint Francis.
The Mount returns to action on Sunday, October 15th, when Robert
Morris visits for a 12:00 p.m. game.
