Brooke Matthews begins her first season as an assistant coachunder B.J. Lucey Johnson in 2012.

“I am very excited to welcome Brooke to the Mount,”said Lucey Johnson, who is entering her second season inEmmitsburg.  “Brooke comes from a background of academicand athletic excellence and she will be a great leader and a rolemodel for our student-athletes.  She has a great passion forthe game and I am very happy to have her join ourstaff.” 

Matthews comes to the Mount after playing at NorthwesternUniversity for the last four years. Matthews finished her careerwith 88 goals and 18 assists for 106 points along with 74 groundballs, 34 draw controls and 18 caused turnovers. Matthew notched 14goals in 16 NCAA Tournament games and played in the NationalChampionship Game all four years, including helping the Wildcats tothe championship in 2008, 2009 and 2011. She posted a career-best25 goals and seven assists for 32 points to help Northwesternreclaim the National Championship in 2011. Northwestern went 85-5in her career and captured the ALC Championship all four years.Matthews’ notched personal bests in ground balls (32), drawcontrols (10) and caused turnovers (9) in her junior campaign andscored a career-high five times against Duke on Apr. 3, 2010.

“I’m really excited to be here at the Mount and forthe opportunity to work with B.J.,” said Matthews. “Ifeel that it is a great opportunity and I will be able to learn alot from her. I am really excited to be here on such a prettycampus with a great bunch of girls and I can’t wait to seewhere the season takes us.”

For her work in the classroom, Matthews was named to the AcademicAll-Big Ten in her final three seasons and earned Big TenDistinguished Scholar recognition for the 2009-10 campaign.

A native of Baltimore, Md., Matthews graduated from FriendsSchool of Baltimore in 2007. She was named the Baltimore MessengerLacrosse Player of the Year in 2007. Matthews was a two-timeAcademic All-American and Baltimore Sun All-City first-teamselection.
