Mount St. Mary’s Director of Track and Field Jay Phillips has announced the return of former head coach Jim Stevenson to the Mount St. Mary’s Coaching Staff.  Stevenson returns to the Mount in the same title as the Mount’s Head Track & Field Coach.

“I couldn’t be more excited to welcome Jim back to the Mount,” said Phillips.  “He understands the vision and mission of our program and instantly makes us better.  Jim’s an excellent coach, well respected in the track & field community, well known and loved in the Mount community, and has been a mentor to many of our alumni across all event areas.”

Stevenson was the head coach for the Mountaineers from 2006-15 after serving as an associate head coach at the previous seven years.  During his tenure at the Mount, he coached NCAA qualifiers in the 1,500m, the long jump, the high jump, the 100m, the 110m hurdles, the shot put, discus and the javelin throw.

Stevenson guided 18 school record holders during his previous time at the Mount while also coaching 36 athletes who won Northeast Conference individual titles. . His athletes held three NEC records, seven All-East honors and a Penn Relays win. Two of his athletes, one male and one female, were named NEC Field Event Athletes of the Year in the jumps and throws.

Prior to Mount St. Mary's, Stevenson was an assistant coach at East Tennessee State University where he was responsible for throws, hurdles and multi events. During his three years he assisted in coaching East Tennessee's first indoor Southern Conference Championship. While at East Tennessee, Stevenson earned a Master's Degree in Sports and Exercise Sciences.

Stevenson completed an undergraduate degree at Mount St. Mary's in 1995. He was a Division I All-American decathlete earning All-East honors. He captured a silver medal in the British National Decathlon Championships and was a member of the world junior championship 4x400m relay team that captured a silver medal in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. He was selected to represent his country as a junior and senior on numerous occasions in the decathlon, 400m, and hurdles.

Stevenson is a member of Mount St. Mary's Hall of Fame for track and field and as an undergraduate, won the Sheridan award for academic and athletic excellence.
